What is a Niche? Why you should Pick a Niche?

What is a niche? Why you should pick a niche?

You’ve probably heard it a million times before by you might be a bit confused when people talk about niche. “You need a niche.” “You need a laser specific niche.” This can be really confusing to business owners if they sell a product that has a wide number of users.

I mean, what if you have a product that everyone uses.  Picking your niche means only targeting a particular, specialised subsection of an audience. Why would you want to limit who you’re targeting I hear you ask?

Well it’s simple really. There’s an old saying, if you don’t market to someone you are marketing to no one. Having your niche, deciding who your target customer avatar is, will have a dramatically positive impact on your marketing.

Creating your niche will have an impact on every piece of your marketing content. It will help you define what content you should create – from the words you’ll say to the order in which you say them. It will help you work out whether text, audio or video is more effective with those you are trying to reach. You’ll be able to understand their buying motivations, what they are likely to search for online. Having a niche also allows you to understand how to use platforms like Social Media Effectively.

Let’s take Facebook for example. With a well-defined niche you can create compelling Facebook ads that are well targeted using Facebook’s advertising platform. Further, there are hundreds of millions of Facebook groups where you could potentially interact with members of your target audience

Whilst we have said that picking your own niche has a dramatic effect on growing your business this is only if you pick the right niche. You need to make sure that the niche that you have chosen is going to be profitable. A good way to start this is using Google’s Keyword Planner, a free tool that allows you to measure search volumes for particular keyword phrases – you can measure how many people are searching for particular phrases and whether people are paying to target some of these phrases on Facebook. If search volumes are low and your competitors aren’t trying to reach this audience it might be time to alter your niche.
